So, where did the crazy idea start that we would quit our jobs and tramp around the world with only a backpack, pair of sandals and a smile? Well to be honest it hatched as most brilliant ideas have in the past, whilst we were drunk! It started as a discussion about work and how there must be more to life than sitting in an office starring at a computer screen and slowly evolved into a plan to travel the world for a year. We started forming some sort of rough plan of countries we would like to visit, sights we would like to see and what sort of budget we might need. Googling websites and books from the library were invaluable with helping to understand how to best make use of round the world tickets and popular routes/destinations and budgets.
Our rough plan was to spend 6 months travelling around beautiful hot countries and then settle for 6 months in Canada. This is when I would learn to become a snowboard instructor and Jayne would enjoy the local hospitality.
Due to financial constraints (and the desperate urge to start the adventure as quick as possible!) we decided to budget for 6-9 months and drop the Canada part of the trip as this part alone would have cost us in excess of £13,000!!
The more we talked about it the more possible it seemed and so the plan began to snowball almost out of control to the point where we bought the tickets and were hurtling towards a leaving date knowing some of the countries we would visit but with little idea of actually where to go and what to do when we get there!!
